![]() A 56 bought some years ago and that I wore and used without thinking much about it were the nascent core of my Casio fascination. But they number a third of what I once had. And I still love the handful of mechanicals I still own. My own personal journey started with analogs and vague memories of a phantom digital from decades ago. There's so much to try, so much to learn, so much to enjoy. So, the value curve is rich right were people are able to dabble and explore. In digitals, though, the sheer range of stuff you can buy and try for under $350 can fill multiple 12-count watch boxes. No wonder it's both boring and frustrating if the next levels attainable are so far away in dollars and so.thin in terms of form and functionality variation. Meaning between $500 and $10,000, we rely on the divisive and subjective valuation of brand equity or hand finishing to differentiate. So, you have this massive, extended plateau where there is almost no functional diversity but only restricted form and finishing variation. Want a minute repeater or perpetual? Be prepared to put out six and high four-figures, respectively, at least. You'd have to move considerably upmarket to get past the run-of-the-mill day, date, or moon phase complications. But don't expect anything too interesting or finely tuned. ![]() Under $350 or so, you're in budget territory and offerings range from AliEx and sheer junk to reasonably functional, passably designed and manufactured mechanicals (San Martin and Seiko Sports 5). The value curve is weighted very differently in mechanicals versus digitals.Oooh, circular applied markers versus circular painted markers that look otherwise identical. Whereas in mechanical analogs (including automatics, hand-wound, and quartz), once you get past the "standard" sub-diver/field/flieger format, where do you go? Vintage homages or idiosyncratic micros. Move into the Gs and you have (not quite) infinite variations to fascinate. in just the Casio non-G line, it's mind boggling. When you consider the incredible range of size, shape, color, etc. There is a tremendous amount of diversity in form and function in digitals and ana-digis.There are two big ones and they are linked. This has also been my trajectory and I think I know the reasons why. ![]()
